Best First Year

Presented to the cadet who exemplifies the aims of Army Cadets and displays a high level of proficiency for a cadet who has only one year of training.

Best Junior NCO

Presented to the Junior NCO (LCpl to MCpl when selected for the award) who best displays the beginning qualities of good leadership throughout the year. In addition, this cadet has excelled in drill, dress, and deportment, has done well in their star level training and has a strong attendance record.

Best Senior NCO

Presented to the Senior NCO (Sergeant and above when selected for the award) who best displays the qualities of a leader, is a proven strong instructor, and has assisted the most in the development of the junior NCO’s and cadets during the current training year. This cadet is a team player and exemplifies the motto of the cadet program, ACER ACERPORAI, As the Maple, so the Sapling.

Best All Round

This award is presented to the cadet who is the most proficient in all aspects of their training and duties. This cadet sets the example for other cadets in the unit and is respected both by his/her superiors and subordinates.

The Stickman

This award is presented to the cadet that has superior dress and deportment both on and off parade. The cadet rarely misses a parade night or unit activity and demonstrates superior devotion to duty. The recipient is chosen by the Corps Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM).

Training Officer's Award

This award is presented to the cadet, parent, or staff who has made the greatest contribution to the Training Department. This individual(s) has assisted the Training Department in lightening the workload and in improving the efficiency of the department. The recipient is chosen by the Training Officer.

The Thin Red Line

The Thin Red line commemorates the actions of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who stretched into two ranks rather than 3, and successfully repelled the Russian Cavalry at the Battle of Balaclava. The red and white dicing on our Glengarries represents that Thin Red Line. Our Thin Red Line award recognizes members of the Corps and friends of the Corps who go “above and beyond” to provide great service to the Cadets of the Corps. This award is chosen by the Commanding Officer.

Best Attendance

This award is presented to the cadet who has the highest percent attendance across regular training night parades as well as field training exercises and citizenship activities. This award is given to the cadet who has been parading with the unit for the full training year.

Best Bandsman

This award is presented the cadet who consistently performs at a high level and demonstrates strong commitment to the band. In addition, the qualities of good conduct, teamwork, and thorough preparation are required. This award is selected by the Pipes and Drums Officer with advice from the instructors.

Hill 70 Award (Best Platoon)

This award is presented to the platoon that has continually demonstrated excellence in drill, dress, and deportment throughout the course of this training year. This platoon has received the most monthly Best Platoon pipe banner this training year.

CWO McCumber Sword of Excellence

This award is to recognize a cadet, individual, association or group that has supported the unit in a manner “above and beyond”, thus ensuring the continued success of the unit. The recipient of this award is selected by the Unit Support Group.

Top Cadet Instructor

The Top Cadet Instructor is awarded to the cadet who effectively utilizes alternate methods of instruction, who is consistently prepared to teach, and who is able to fully engage their students to present a lesson that is dynamic and interesting. The recipient is chosen by the cadets.

Most Improved

This award is presented to the cadet who, over the course of this training year, has demonstrated an effort to improve themselves and contribute to the functioning of the corps in a positive manner in all areas of their cadet career, including drill, dress, and deportment. Through this effort, this cadet has also demonstrated the ability to become a good leader and a stronger cadet.

Top Cadet in each Star Level

These awards are presented to the cadets who have demonstrated the most proficiency in their respective star level. They have a strong understanding of the concepts taught and have effectively applied those skills both at the LHQ and on Field Training Exercises. The cadets are one of the top in the subjects of citizenship, leadership, fitness/sports, bushcraft performance objectives. The recipient for each is chosen by their respective Star Level Officer.
